The Department of Town and Regional Planning started off as part of Department of Land Surveying during 1976/77 academic session. It later became the Department of Town and Regional Planning and Architecture during the 1978/79 academic session.
The Department ran a four (4) year programme until 1979 when the Federal government decided to change the Polytechnic Programme to two-tier system of National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). In 1986, the department started running Estate Management Programme at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma Levels. In 1994/95 session, the Estate Management unit became autonomous and was excised from the department of Town and Regional Planning.
The Department that started with a few members of staff has improved in number and quality over the years. In the year 2009, based on the recommendation of the accreditation team, the name of the Department was changed to Department of Urban and Regional Planning thus the Certificate. In 2016 the Department Made Proposal for the establishment of Department of Transportation Planning and Management up till date, the following distinguished members of staff have headed the Department.
