The institute started as School of Basic Studies at the inception of the Kwara State College of Technology in 1972. Later when the name of the institution was changed to Kwara State Polytechnic, the School was similarly changed to Institute of Basic and Applied Sciences. Though, the basic subjects were retained, professional courses such as Catering and Hotel Management, Computer Science, Science Laboratory Technology and Statistics, and later Office Technology and Management (which was moved from another institute), and more recently, Leisure and Tourism Management, Agricultural Technology and Mass Communication were added.
The institute became too large with eight academic departments so, it was split into two in 2012 and; the Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS) and Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT) emerged. By this, Departments of Computer Science, Office Technology and Management and; Mass Communication are now in IICT while the Institute of Applied Sciences has five Departments (Science Laboratory Technology, Hospitality Management, Leisure and Tourism Management, Agricultural Technology and Statistics). In addition, a new Department of Food Science and Technology is billed to take off in 2017/2018 academic session starting with National Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics.
