The Institute of General Studies is an offshoot of the former School of Basic Studies of the then Kwara State College of Technology. Simply identified with acronym (SBS) the School of Basic Studies was one of the four (4) Schools that made up the College of Technology at its inception in 1973. The (SBS) offered courses in basic subjects toward preparing students for the London Cambridge ‘A’ Level examinations that qualified students for direct entry into universities. Thus, the school provided important services to the College.
When in 1987 the college changed its name to Kwara State Polytechnic, the former Schools dissolved into institutes and the transformation gave birth to the institute of General Studies.
At its inception, the Institute hosted two departments: English and Social Studies. In 1997, the two Departments changed their names to Department of English and Communication and Department of Liberal Studies respectively. The Department of English and Communication handles courses in English and Communication Skills for all levels of students (ND/ HND) in the Polytechnic. In 1997, the Department introduced into its programme, a Post Graduate programme in Public Relations which it runs till date. The Department of Liberal Studies offers courses in Citizenship Education and other courses like Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, History, Sciences and Social Sciences in the ND and HND classes to enrich the studies in other academic programmes.
The Polytechnic authority, in 2013, merged the Departments of Mathematics and Geography with the Institute thus making the Departments under the Institute to be four. The Department of Geography offers the Post-Graduate programmes in Rural Development, Geographical Information System. In addition to these Departments, the Institute has a Remedial Unit which provides remedial programmes that qualify students for National Diploma programmes. In all, the Institute has had six Directors who have Co-ordinated the affairs of the Institute successfully over the years.
Academic staff of the Institute are well qualified and experienced. They hold academic qualifications ranging from first degree to Ph.D in their various disciplines. The administrative staff are also qualified for the various positions they occupy.
ACTIVITIES IN THE INSTITUTE
Academic Staff members of the Institute teach all the NBTE prescribed course at the National and Higher National Diploma levels. In addition, each Department in the Institute regularly organize Departmental Seminars whereby Staff members present academic paper. The Institute has successfully organized Two National Conferences that attracted participants from all parts of the country. The Department of English and Communication annually thrills the Polytechnic community with its presentation of different Convocation plays on the eve of the annual Convocation.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE INSTITUTE
The Institute has successfully mounted two presented scholarly papers at the two conferences. In addition, academic staff of the Institute have attended and presented papers at national and international conferences organized within and outside the country. Different departments of the institute have produced textbooks on the various course taught to students by the department. Individual academic staff of the department have also produced textbooks, novels collection of poems and plays that are widely adjusted academically enriching. Academic members of the institute also belong to professional bodes like ANNA, NESA, NIM and NIPRP.
The Institute also co-ordinates the setting of examination questions for the post JAMB or Post UTME examinations annually organized by the Polytechnic.
FUTURE ASPIRATIONS OF THE INSTITUTE
The institute aspires to provide quality teaching to students of the polytechnic generally. Its plans to encourage research activities by staff members. It hopes to encourage the attainment of higher academic qualifications by staff members. The Institute has a vision to establish a Language Village in the Polytechnic. Programmes leading to the development of Language skills shall be organized. Finally the Institute aspires to co-ordinate inter-Departmental and inter Institute quiz and Departmental competitions for students of the Polytechnic in a bid to enrich the students academically and promote social cohesion among students of the polytechnic.
